Slavic nations inhabit Eastern Europe and have an old history of creating dolls for spiritual, ritual and magic purposes. The handmade dolls you see here mostly originate from Russian, Ukrainian, and Byelorussian traditions. They include fertility dolls, spirit dolls, and calendar dolls.

Lada, ritual doll maker
Lada started to put her inherited capacities to practice since childhood. Later on, in the circle of others seeking insights from the traditional rituals of Slavic, Celtic and Germanic pre-Christian paganism, she gained her first hands-on experience of conducting rites, making ritual healing objects...>>
Every little detail of these handmade dolls is meaningful and has its purpose. The skirts of some dolls have plain edges because it is believed that clothes for dolls, especially those aimed at enhancing fertility, should be made without a needle and scissors so that the life of the person for whom it is made is "neither stabbed nor shorn."

A fertility doll used to be a necessary object at weddings. It was given with love by her relatives to a woman who had a hard time conceiving. As far as the continuous life of family and producing heirs is so important, I place a special emphasis on fertility dolls.

Traditionally, only female images were made - both for rituals and for children's play. If a male doll was needed for acting out a role in a game, a simple wooden stick was used. Of course, sometimes male figures were made as well but mostly as spirit dolls (like Koz'ma & Demyan).

Researchers explain such a preference of female dolls by the idea that such a incorporated in itself both female and male qualities and nature: soft ragged fabric filled with flax or cotton (for a head) and a hard stick inside as a base created a symbol of fertility and continuity of life, ensuring a family's and clan's survival.

Handmade dolls were a part of important rites of passage; with their help young girls and boys (who also played with dolls till the year of 7-8) were learning social roles, acting out community events and ways of behavior at such celebrations as wedding, for example.

Various spirit dolls served as women's helpers in family and household maters. If a disagreement with her husband happened, a woman would make a special doll. Operating with it as with an "energetic broom" she would "sweep" out all quarrels from her house, for them not to happen ever again.

Ritual dolls were widely used in calendar fertility rituals, at the times of harvest and other significant calendar events, like solstice. Also, dolls were used to enhance female fertility: they were believed to help conceive and bear a baby.

Traditional dolls have undergone certain changes throughout the last couple of centuries, but they continue fulfilling their healing and ritual purpose. Today, they are used in the courses of doll therapy that increasingly gain popularity. These courses are not only for children, as you may think. No, their often attendees are women who want to improve the quality of their lives, solve some family issues, or find happy solutions.

Every doll you find here is made by Lada according to traditional ways practiced in Russia, Ukraine, and Byelorussia for centuries. Every doll is made with love and care, filled with the maker's ability to create talismans and protective amulets.

Your order can be highly personalized, if you prefer it, you can describe in an email your particular situation and discuss with Lada whether you want a traditional ritual being performed over your doll to enhance its power (of no additional cost for you).
